Use more than one trigger in a workflow

Give different automations in the same workflow their own schedule or event, with up to 10 triggers per workflow.

Written by Jonatan Gomes

If parts of your process need to run at different times, you can keep them in one workflow. Add a trigger for each schedule or event, and choose which automations it runs.

For example, one workflow can refresh sales data every hour on weekdays with automations 1–4, append a monthly snapshot on the 1st with automation 5, and process each form response as soon as someone submits it with automation 6. Each trigger runs independently and only runs the automations assigned to it.

If you previously separated a process into workflows with different schedules, see Combine a process split across several workflows into one workflow.

Add a trigger

  1. Open your workflow in the Sheetgo web app.

  2. Select the Triggers icon in the workflow sidebar, or select "Triggers" at the top of the Automations panel, next to "Run all".

  3. Select "+" ("New trigger"). If you already have several triggers, you can also select "+ New trigger" at the bottom of the list.

  4. Turn on the switch at the top ("Auto-Run" or "Run automatically") if it's off. You can't edit the fields while the switch is off.

  5. Under NAME, enter a name that describes what the trigger does. You can keep the default name, such as "Trigger 2", and rename it later.

  6. Under AUTOMATIONS, choose "All automations" or use "Select automations" to pick the automations this trigger should run. Review the assignment rules below before saving.

  7. Under TRIGGER OPTIONS, choose when it runs. New triggers default to "Based on a schedule". Complete the fields for your chosen option.

  8. Review the "Consumption" estimate, then select "Save changes".

"Save changes" stays disabled until the trigger is complete.

You can also open trigger settings from your workspace: select the trigger summary on the workflow's card, such as "Weekdays at 10AM" or "Manual trigger". The settings open in a dialog. The switch reads "Auto-Run" or "Run automatically", depending on where you open it.

Manage triggers

The trigger list of a workflow with four triggers: Hourly refresh (Weekdays, every hour), Source sheet edited (On file change, Sales data 2026), Month-end snapshot (On the last Friday at 5PM) and New CRM deals (On webhook event), each with its own switch

A workflow with one trigger opens directly into that trigger's settings. A workflow with several triggers opens a list.

Each row has its own switch and a ⋮ menu:

  • Select "Edit" to change the trigger's name, automations, or timing.

  • Select "Duplicate" to start from a similar trigger, then adjust its settings.

  • Select "Delete" to remove the trigger. Its automations remain in the workflow but become unassigned.

You can add up to 10 triggers per workflow. At that limit, the add button remains visible but disabled, with the note "Trigger limit reached (10 per workflow)".

Pause automatic runs

Turn off a trigger's switch to stop its automations from running automatically. Other triggers continue to run. A trigger saved with its switch off stays dormant.

The workflow counts as automated while at least one trigger is on. Turn all triggers off to pause all automatic runs.

The bell icon at the top of the Triggers panel opens "Failure notification settings". These settings apply to all automatic runs in the workflow.

Rules for assigning automations

Each automation belongs to one trigger

In "Select automations", an automation that belongs to another trigger shows that trigger's name next to it.

Selecting that automation and saving moves it to the trigger you're editing. It stops running under the previous trigger. Sheetgo warns you before saving; if the move leaves the previous trigger with no automations, Sheetgo pauses it.

Two triggers can't claim the same automation and make it run twice. However, two triggers can run at the same time because each runs only its own automations.

If every automation already belongs to a trigger, "New trigger" shows "All automations are already assigned to a trigger."

Automations run in workflow order

A trigger runs its assigned automations from top to bottom, in the order they appear on the workflow canvas. It never reorders them.

The selection counter reflects this, for example: "3/11 · run in workflow order".

Unassigned automations don't run automatically

A new automation starts unassigned. Add it to a trigger if it should run automatically.

The exception is a workflow whose only trigger uses "All automations". That trigger also covers automations you add later.

A trigger with no automations doesn't run. You can't save one without selecting automations: Sheetgo shows "Select at least one automation, or choose All automations."

Deleting an automation removes it from its trigger.

Adding a second trigger pauses the original "All automations" trigger

Your workflow's original "All automations" trigger covers every automation as long as it's the only trigger.

When you save a second trigger, Sheetgo pauses the original rather than choosing its automations for you. The editor warns you before saving, and the original trigger shows:

"This trigger runs all automations, so it was paused when another trigger was added. Choose the automations it should run to turn it back on."

Sheetgo keeps its name, schedule, and settings. Choose the automations it should run, save your changes, and turn it back on.

Read the workflow at a glance

The trigger list shows each trigger's type icon, colored dot, name, and a caption describing when it runs and what it runs. For example:

  • "Weekdays, every hour · 4 automations"

  • "On file change · Sales data 2026"

The list also shows these status labels:

Label

Meaning and next step

"Paused"

The trigger is off. Turn it on when you want its automatic runs to resume.

"Completed"

The one-time trigger has run.

"Needs attention"

The file or folder trigger isn't receiving changes. Open it and save again to reconnect.

In the Automations panel, a thin colored bar shows which trigger owns each automation. Hover over the bar to see the trigger's name.

An unassigned automation has a dimmed, hollow marker. Its tooltip reads "Not assigned to any trigger — runs only with Run all automations".

On your workspace, the workflow card shows one trigger's schedule, such as "On the 1st day at 8AM". A badge such as "+3" indicates additional active triggers. Select the summary to open the trigger list.

Common questions

Do I need to change my existing workflows?

No. Every workflow created before multiple triggers existed still has one trigger and works as before. The only new control is the "+" button. You only need to make changes if you want to add more triggers.

Can two triggers run at the same time?

Yes. Each run only touches the automations assigned to its trigger.

Why is my original trigger paused?

If your original trigger used "All automations", saving a second trigger paused it. Edit the original trigger, choose its own automations, save, and turn it back on.

A trigger also pauses if you move all of its automations to another trigger.

Why doesn't my new automation run automatically?

New automations start unassigned unless the workflow's only trigger uses "All automations". Add the automation to a trigger and check that the trigger is on.

Can I use a different schedule for just one automation?

Yes. Create a trigger with only that automation selected, then set its schedule under TRIGGER OPTIONS.

What does "Run all automations" do?

"Run all automations" runs every automation in workflow order, including unassigned ones. It ignores trigger assignments and whether triggers are paused.

Running a single automation manually also works as before.
